The King of the Wing competition is over. The winners were announced, and many unique birds emerged victorious: Blue Jays, hawks, and even a screech owl. The only bird couple that won was that cute pair of ducks in top hats who took home first prize. This year’s winning bird has an extraordinary name and comes from one particular country: China. As avid bird watchers worldwide know, China has some excellent birders in its population. They are so good that they alone have taken ten first-place victories in this national competition. Some say that this is because more people in China are birds, but that’s just a myth.

 

What makes this year’s King of the wing competition special is the passion of more than three hundred American bird watchers who journeyed to the west coast to see their feathered friends. The trip was not easy for the Americans, for it was not very long ago that China was on most American government’s travel restriction lists. Despite being able to see birds in their native habitats and make eye contact with them, some were anxious about returning home without fulfilling their life-long dreams of seeing these rare species in person.

Wanting to do more than they could have ever imagined, these bird enthusiasts decided to make a trip overseas. It’s also a bit of a shame knowing that none of these birds will be coming back to America.”
